RIP

RIP (Routing Information Protocol)
      RIP has Three major versions

  •       RIPv1
  •       RIPv2
  •       RIPng

RIPv1

It is a CLASSFULL routing protocol.
It does not send or receive subnet mask.
Rip BROADCAT ROUTING update every 30 seconds.it broadcast whole routing table in the update.
       Rip metric is hop count.
Rip's maximum distance is 15 HOPS. 16 hops is infinity and is used to mark a route as dead.
Rip's ADMINISTRATIVE DISTANCE(AD) is 120.lower administrative distance is better for route.
It uses HOLD DOWN TIMER of 180 seconds so that it does not propagate bad routes and does not have a count-to-infinity         routing loop.
Route is flushed at 240 seconds.
It uses Default LOAD BALANCING across four equal cost routes.
Rip work at transport layer and send out updates on UDP port 520.

RIPv2

It is same as RIPv1 but it is classless routing protocol
       It support MD5 authentication
RIPv2 sends and receives version 2 updates only. RIPv1 sends version 1 updates and receives both 1 and 2 , version 2             information is ignored.
It support Auto summarized by default.
It is true distance vector routing protocol.
       It support VLSM/CIDR.

Configure CISCO RIP  IOS Command Line Interface

STEP :1 Router(config)# router rip (Enables a RIP routing process, which places you in router configuration mode.)
     STEP :2 Router(config-router)# network ip-address(Associates a network with a RIP routing process.)
     STEP :3 Router(config-router)#no auto-summary
STEP :4 Router(config-router)# neighbor ip-address(Defines a neighboring router with which to exchange                     routing  information.)
     STEP :5 Router(config-router)#redistribute static
     STEP :6 Router(config-router)#passive-interface (interface)
     STEP :7 Router(config-router)# exit
     STEP :8 Router(config)# interface ethernet1
     STEP :9 Router(config-if)# ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
     STEP :10 Router(config-if)# exit
     STEP :11 Router#debug ip rip

Example of RIPv1 Routing protocol

first step is to configure the hostname on the routers. Enter into the router and type the command enable to move into privilege EXEC mode, then type configure terminal to move into global configuration mode and type hostname then the name of the router.

  1.     Router>enable
  2.     Router#configure terminal
  3.     Router(config)#hostname R1

The next thing you need to do is to configure the interfaces on R1, R2

  R1’s Interface Setup
    R1(config)#interface fa0/0
    R1(config-if)#ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.192
    R1(config-if)#no shut
    R1(config-if)#exit
    R1(config)#interface fa/0/1
    R1(config-if)#ip add 192.168.1.65 255.255.255.192
    R1(config-if)#no shut
    R1(config-if)#exit
    R1(config)#interface fa0/2
    R1(config-if)#ip add 192.168.1.129 255.255.255.192
    R1(config-if)#no shut
    R1(config)#interface fa0/3
    R1(config-if)#ip add 10.0.0.1 255.0.0.0
    R1(config-if)#no shut
   R2’s Interface Setup
R2(config)#interface fa0/0
R2(config-if)#ip add 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0
R2(config-if)#no shut
R2(config-if)#exit
R2(config)#interface fa0/1
R2(config-if)#ip add 192.168.3.1 255.255.255.0
  R2(config-if)#no shut
R2(config-if)#exit
R2(config)#interface fa0/2
R2(config-if)#ip add 192.168.4.1 255.255.255.0
R2(config-if)#no shut
R2(config)#interface fa0/3
R2(config-if)#ip add 10.0.0.2 255.0.0.0
R2(config-if)#no shut
The next and final step is to configure RIPv1

R1(config)#router rip
  • R1(config-router)#network 192.168.1.0
  • R1(config-router)#network 192.168.1.64
  • R1(config-router)#network 192.168.1.128
  • R1(config-router)#network 10.0.0.0
  • R1(config-router)#exit

    1. R2(config)#router rip
    2. R2(config-router)#network 192.168.2.0
    3. R2(config-router)#network 192.168.3.0
    4. R2(config-router)#network 192.168.4.0
    5. R2(config-router)#network 10.0.0.0
    6. R2(config-router)#exit

        Example of RIPv2 Routing protocol
If you want to apply the RIPv2 on above example than change one right side network in to the 192.168.1.192/26 network and than apply RIPv2 because RIPv1 functioning only classfull it is not supported classless routing. RIPv2 support VLSM  Its Allow MD5 Authentications.

      R1’s Interface Setup

    2. R1(config-if)#ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.192
    3. R1(config-if)#no shut
    4. R1(config-if)#exit
    5. R1(config)#interface fa/0/1
    6. R1(config-if)#ip add 192.168.1.65 255.255.255.192
    7. R1(config-if)#no shut
    8. R1(config-if)#exit
    9. R1(config)#interface fa0/2
    10. R1(config-if)#ip add 192.168.1.129 255.255.255.192

    1. R2(config)#interface fa0/0
    2. R2(config-if)#ip add 192.168.1.193 255.255.255.192
    3. R2(config-if)#no shut
    4. R2(config-if)#exit
    5. R2(config)#interface fa0/1
    6. R2(config-if)#ip add 192.168.3.1 255.255.255.0
    7. R2(config-if)#no shut
    8. R2(config-if)#exit
    9. R2(config)#interface fa0/2
    10. R2(config-if)#ip add 192.168.4.1 255.255.255.0

    2. R1(config-router)#Version 2
    3. R1(config-router)#network 192.168.1.0
    4. R1(config-router)#network 192.168.1.64
    5. R1(config-router)#network 192.168.1.128
    6. R1(config-router)#network 10.0.0.0
    7. R1(config-router)#exit
    1. R2(config)#router rip
    2. R2(config-router)#Version 2
    3. R2(config-router)#network 192.168.1.192
